Harlan Jay Ellison was born to Louis Laverne and Serita Rosenthal Ellison, a small Jewish family in Cleveland Ohio, to be later raised in Painesville alongside his sister, Beverly. While Serita worked in a thrift store, Louis owned a jewelry store and was a dentist to keep the family afloat financially.
